BEHIND THE MASK
BEHIND THE MASK.
BY ROBERT BURNS.
PROLOGUE.
On a sunlit beach on an island near Tahiti several young islanders are romping naked near the water’s edge. As they scream and shout they are joined by a slim European man aged around forty.
The man, who is wearing a pair of white bathing trunks, murmurs something to the boys and shortly afterwards indulges in some wild horseplay with them.
Suddenly as a flock of gulls screech overhead, the man embraces one of the boys with passion. Then stops and laughs and beckons to the boy together with one of his companions to follow him across the sand to a small cove, where another older, stout, European man, dressed in a white tropical suit and wearing dark glasses as protection against the sun, is watching.
There is a short whispered conversation between the two Europeans, during the course of which the older man repeatedly glances at the two young islanders. Then nodding in approval he hands the slim man a T. shirt bearing the name of RUDI, and waves goodbye as the first man whisks the boys away.
EXT. A NARROW TRACK ROAD IN THE INTERIOR OF THE ISLAND. NIGHT.
The man called Rudi is driving slowly along a road fringed by giant eucalyptus trees and forest. After a few moments he comes upon a small clearing and pulls up outside the battered exterior of a dimly lit mission home. As he does so the camera focuses on a sign which says
THE ORPHANAGE OF SAINT CHRISTIEN.
INT. A ROOM INSIDE THE ORPHANAGE. NIGHT.
Inside a small dark room Rudi is talking to a tall austere man, sitting at a table, who is clad in the robes of a priest. The conversation appears to grow heated. Then, as Rudi passes a bundle of French Franc notes across the table, the priest calms down and is seen nodding in agreement. Shortly afterwards he rings a bell and the two young boys, first seen with Rudi on the beach, appear. Rudi puts his arms around the boys and as he does so, and the scene begins to fade, we see they are no more than children.
